The Fiji Police Force is actively investigating files related to the ongoing Commission of Inquiry concerning former Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) Commissioner Barbara Malimali. Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu has indicated that not all files have been transferred to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) for a legal opinion, with only two files currently remaining under active investigation. Tudravu expressed optimism that the remaining files would soon be submitted to the DPP, which will provide guidance on the next steps.
The inquiry, led by Justice David Ashton-Lewis, was initiated after hearings into Malimali’s appointment. Following these proceedings, the report was referred to both the Police and FICAC for further action. The ODPP has previously noted that an initial investigation was considered incomplete, which prompted the case to be forwarded to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) for a more thorough examination.
In a related development, Barbara Malimali appeared in court today challenging her dismissal from the FICAC. She contends that the Prime Minister lacked constitutional authority to advise the President regarding the termination of her post.
As the investigation progresses, the involvement of the ODPP and CID indicates a commitment to ensuring that due process is followed. The comprehensive judicial approach taken reflects a determination to address any issues emerging from the inquiry, offering a hopeful outlook for transparency and integrity within Fiji’s Anti-Corruption framework.
