Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has delivered a strong New Year’s message reaffirming his Government’s commitment to addressing crime, improving law enforcement, and enhancing public safety in Fiji. He stated that Fiji “will not tolerate criminal networks that profit from destroying lives,” signaling a firm stance against organized crime.

In his address to the nation, Mr. Rabuka acknowledged the persistent challenges of drug abuse and violent crime, assuring citizens that government authorities are intensifying efforts to restore safety and public confidence. “We are strengthening enforcement, border controls, rehabilitation programmes, and community-based prevention,” he declared, underscoring the necessity for comprehensive measures.

The Prime Minister extended his support to the police and justice institutions, commending the Commissioner of Police and the Fiji Police Force for their steadfast dedication to maintaining public safety. He also noted the active role of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) in enhancing national security and indicated that improved collaboration between the Police Force and RFMF, under proper ministerial guidance, would strengthen their collective response to crime.

With a specific focus on transnational organized crime affecting Fiji’s maritime areas, Mr. Rabuka highlighted the importance of regional cooperation to effectively combat and dismantle criminal syndicates. This collaboration is essential in identifying and disrupting these illicit networks.

In addition to combatting crime, Mr. Rabuka raised concerns regarding the rising number of HIV cases, particularly among women and children. He reinforced the government’s commitment to enhancing education, expanding testing services, and improving treatment options. “This is not just a medical challenge — it is a shared national responsibility,” he urged, calling upon families, educational institutions, churches, community groups, and sports organizations to collaborate in these efforts.

Mr. Rabuka concluded his message with an optimistic vision for the New Year, emphasizing unity and collective action in facing these challenges. He proclaimed, “Together, we can turn the tide,” reflecting a hopeful outlook for a safer and healthier Fiji, rooted in collaboration and community involvement.
