Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has urged President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu to take his time in responding to the recommendations made by the Judicial Service Commission (JSC). Rabuka emphasized that the timing of the response should be determined by the constitutional office holders, specifically the chief commissioner of the JSC and the President himself.

Rabuka stated, “That’s not part of my role. JSC has made a decision, and they should leave it to the President to make his own decision in response to that.” His comments come amidst rising concerns from senior legal figures regarding the delays in the President’s reaction to the recommendations, which highlight the sensitive balance within Fiji’s judicial system.

Additionally, Rabuka addressed a recent High Court ruling that found he provided unlawful advice to the President. While he acknowledged the court’s judgment, he expressed skepticism about its accuracy: “I do not think that’s totally correct. But that will have to be judged by the court.” He is currently considering an appeal to safeguard the President and uphold the integrity of his office.

Rabuka stressed the importance of a natural and unhurried response to the JSC’s recommendations, asserting, “There’s no need to rush. So we just have to wait.” This commitment reflects his dedication to maintaining the integrity of constitutional processes in Fiji, promoting a thoughtful approach to governance during a period of legal examination. This careful handling of the situation emphasizes a broader commitment to ensuring judicial independence and upholding constitutional values amidst the unique challenges presently faced by the government.
