Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka addressed the media in a press conference, asserting that the recent changes in his Cabinet do not indicate instability in the government. This statement comes in the wake of the resignation of Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Professor Biman Prasad, who has been charged by the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) for breaching political disclosure laws.
Rabuka emphasized the unwavering bond between the Coalition partners, The People’s Alliance and the National Federation Party (NFP), stating, “There has been no impact on the Coalition partnership. That partnership remains intact.” He expressed confidence that their shared agenda would continue unaffected, especially as Parliament prepares to consider crucial constitutional and electoral amendments.
The charges against Prasad stem from allegations that he failed to comply with asset disclosure regulations under the Political Parties Act and provided false information. These claims arose from a review of public-interest complaints dating back to 2015. Despite the allegations, Rabuka reiterated that his government respects due process and the independence of FICAC. He denied any suggestion that the commission has been used politically against members of his government, stating, “The Government has not used FICAC as its weapon.”
Recent resignations within the Cabinet, including that of former Deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica just a week prior, have fueled speculation on social media regarding potential political maneuvering. However, Rabuka dismissed these notions, clarifying that no underlying political strategies were at play and affirming the integrity of his administration.
Rabuka confirmed the appointment of Assistant Minister Esrom Immanuel to oversee the finance portfolio left vacant by Prasad and Kamikamica’s resignations. He expressed gratitude toward Prasad for his service while confirming that the ongoing legal issues facing Prasad would be dealt with respectfully and without interference.
