Fiji PM Rabuka Reassures Coalition Stability as Prasad Resigns from Cabinet

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has assured that the stability of his coalition remains intact, despite recent speculation concerning a potential leadership crisis. This announcement comes on the heels of Finance Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Professor Biman Prasad’s resignation from the Cabinet. Rabuka emphasized that Prof. Prasad will retain his position as a Member of Parliament and continue his involvement with the National Federation Party (NFP). He expressed his gratitude for Prasad’s service since December 2022.

Rabuka indicated that his discussions earlier today confirmed that the coalition partnership among the National Federation Party and its allies is solid and continuing. He stated, “According to the discussion I had this morning, it will not impact the coalition partnership,” assuring stakeholders and the public that the governance will move forward as planned.

In light of Prof. Prasad’s resignation, Rabuka has appointed Emmanuel, previously an Assistant Minister of Finance, to manage the vacant responsibilities. The Prime Minister clarified that these resignations are personal decisions and not an indication of any broader political maneuvers ahead of the 2026 elections. He also noted that any legal issues concerning Prof. Prasad would be resolved through the court system.

The current political landscape, marked by Prasad’s recent statements of appreciation for Rabuka’s leadership, suggests a commitment to maintaining a collaborative environment within the coalition. Commentators have noted that this atmosphere of mutual respect is crucial for navigating the challenges faced by the Fijian government.

With the coalition leaders expressing confidence in their unity, the government appears poised to tackle pressing national issues. Looking ahead, Rabuka is scheduled to embark on a visit to New Zealand for discussions and to participate in Fiji Day celebrations, which emphasizes the government’s ongoing commitment to a prosperous future for Fiji, especially its youth. This proactive approach signals a hopeful trajectory for the coalition and the nation’s governance.
