Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has highlighted the need for the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) to take on a supportive role in combating drug trafficking, rather than assuming the lead in these efforts. This position was articulated during a press conference, prompted by remarks from Brigadier General Manoa Gadai, the Commander of the Joint Task Force Command at Blackrock Camp, who proposed that the military might spearhead the Inter-Agency Joint Counter Drugs Operation.
Rabuka expressed that he was not aware of Gadai’s statements and underscored the critical role of collaboration between the RFMF and the police in addressing the drug issue. “It’s important to verify the incidents mentioned by Brigadier General Gadai,” he noted, indicating the necessity for thorough investigation before proceeding.
The Prime Minister also expressed his confidence in key government figures, particularly Minister for Policing Ioane Naivalurua and Minister for Defence and Veteran Affairs Pio Tikoduadua. He asserted that there is a clear understanding between these ministers, and he believes the leaders of both the Police and the RFMF are well-prepared to work cohesively. “Having been trained throughout their careers, I am confident that the operational heads will collaborate effectively,” Rabuka added.
In light of recent allegations involving police officers in drug trafficking, the Prime Minister urged those making such claims to provide solid evidence. He stressed that any allegations should be directed to relevant investigative bodies for proper validation.
