Young people in Fiji are stepping into the spotlight to address the escalating drug problem within their communities, advocating for enhanced support systems, education, and rehabilitation initiatives. Among the voices of change is 18-year-old Nishal Narayan from Baulevu, who previously held the position of Minister for Agriculture in last year’s Youth Parliament.
Narayan underscores the critical role youth can play in confronting drug-related challenges, emphasizing the importance of open discussions to tackle the issue. He warns that silence only worsens the drug crisis, which is rapidly infiltrating the lives of young Fijians.
In his quest to understand the concerns surrounding drug use, Narayan has sought feedback from peers across the nation. The feedback reveals a strong desire among youths for tighter border controls and increased accountability in drug distribution. He believes that true accountability demands a collective response from the whole community.
“We need to reduce and prevent drug use among our youths. Youths must look out for each other,” Narayan said. He views the growth of drug issues as a serious threat to the wellbeing of both the youth and the future of Fiji. While acknowledging that a solution won’t materialize overnight, he stresses that ignoring the problem could threaten Fiji’s prospects.
Narayan calls on his generation to unite in the face of this crisis, asserting that a resilient Fiji starts with drug-free youths. He encourages his peers to make constructive choices rather than hiding harmful behaviors, highlighting that many young individuals feel unsafe in their neighborhoods.
With the elections on the horizon, he urges his fellow youths to participate in the voting process and advocate for changes that will address drug issues. Narayan is optimistic that ongoing dialogue and engagement in drug prevention programs will mobilize young Fijians to create safer, healthier communities. This youth-driven movement not only aims to combat drug use but also seeks to build a brighter future for Fiji as a whole, exemplifying the powerful impact that proactive and united youth can have in shaping their nation’s destiny.
