According to sources familiar with the discussion, this unusual request was swiftly declined by Schumer, who indicated that he lacked the authority to accommodate such a demand.
Since then, Trump has maintained his hold on over $16 billion designated for the Gateway Project, a critical infrastructure initiative designed to connect New York and New Jersey via a new rail tunnel under the Hudson River. In response to the funding freeze, the states of New Jersey and New York have filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration, claiming the suspension of funds is unlawful.
While a spokesperson for Schumer opted not to comment, the White House has yet to respond to requests for clarification.
