Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka is making an official visit to Japan this week, at the invitation of the Japanese government, to strengthen the enduring friendship between the two nations. This visit is particularly significant as it marks one of the first opportunities for Rabuka to engage with Japan’s newly elected female Prime Minister, Ms. Takaichi Sanae, following her historic election last month.
A focal point of the visit will be a bilateral meeting where the two leaders are expected to sign the Lomavata-Kizuna Partnership Joint Communique. This agreement aims to reinforce Fiji and Japan’s established partnership, focusing on essential areas such as climate resilience, economic development, technology, and cultural exchanges.
While in Japan, Prime Minister Rabuka will also meet with the Fijian diaspora, providing updates on Fiji’s national development priorities and recent advancements. The relationship between Fiji and Japan has been robust since diplomatic ties were established in 1970, characterized by collaborative efforts across various sectors, including infrastructure, education, and health.
Rabuka’s departure is scheduled for tonight, and he is expected to return on November 16, 2025. During his absence, the Minister for Lands and Mineral Resources, Filimoni Vosarogo, will assume the role of Acting Prime Minister.
This visit presents a promising opportunity for both leaders to build on the longstanding relationship and tackle shared challenges, paving the way for greater collaboration towards a stable and prosperous future in the Pacific region.
