The Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) is poised to introduce plans for a new drug rehabilitation center in Naboro, responding to the escalating issue of drug abuse among inmates. Acting Commissioner Auta Moceisuva underscored that this initiative forms part of a comprehensive strategy aimed at improving prison services and providing targeted support for offenders struggling with addiction.
Mr. Moceisuva shared insights about ongoing discussions with various authorities regarding the establishment of the facility and expressed optimism for donor partners to extend vital support for its construction. He pointed out the considerable challenges that current correctional facilities encounter in managing drug-dependent inmates, who often exhibit violent or erratic behavior upon entry.
Highlighting the gravity of the situation, the commissioner remarked that inmates with substance use disorders frequently attempt to smuggle drugs and mobile phones into prisons, creating additional security risks. “Those with addictions will go to great lengths to smuggle drugs into the facility, whether through their body cavities or by throwing them into the walls of our facilities,” he explained.
In an effort to address these pressing challenges, Mr. Moceisuva indicated that discussions are ongoing to bolster security technology at prison gates, including the potential use of X-ray machines, although funding limitations present a significant hurdle.
The envisioned rehabilitation center in Naboro is expected to provide specialized programs aimed at treating addiction, reducing recidivism, and facilitating the reintegration of inmates into society.
