A contingent of 156 military personnel from Fiji has returned home after successfully completing their Peacekeeping Assistance mission in Iraq as part of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Iraq (UNAMI). This deployment marks the conclusion of Fiji’s involvement in the mission, which is wrapping up this year.

Pio Tikoduadua, Minister for Defence and Veterans Affairs, formally welcomed the returning soldiers, expressing deep appreciation for their commitment and professionalism demonstrated throughout their service. He noted the personal sacrifices made by these individuals while representing Fiji on the global stage.

“I am proud to welcome you home safely. You carried the flag of Fiji with honour, discipline, and courage in a challenging environment, and your safe return is something we are deeply thankful for,” Tikoduadua remarked. He also acknowledged the leaders and senior officers who managed the mission, emphasizing their crucial role in ensuring the safety of the teams deployed overseas.

“It is never easy to lead on tour. As a leader, your greatest responsibility is to bring every soldier home alive and well. I thank our commanders for carrying that duty with integrity and care,” he added.

The Minister also encouraged the returning personnel to reconnect with their families and cherish their time at home. “Spend quality time with your loved ones and dedicate your resources and financial gains toward your families who stood by you while you were away,” he urged.

Tikoduadua reinforced Fiji’s deep appreciation for the soldiers’ service. The successful return of these military personnel signifies the end of the country’s contribution to the UNAMI mission, showcasing Fiji’s enduring commitment to international peacekeeping and its respected role in global initiatives aimed at promoting stability. This significant milestone is a moment of pride for the island nation and its citizens as they honor the service of those who have represented them abroad.
