The Fiji Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) has decided to pause the implementation of the new electricity tariff, which was scheduled to take effect on January 1, 2026. This suspension allows for a 21-day period dedicated to public consultation regarding the proposed tariff structure and its potential effects.
This decision comes in light of varied responses from the public following the announcement of the new rates on December 19, which were formulated after a regulatory review initiated by Energy Fiji Limited (EFL). The FCCC’s intention behind this additional consultation is to encourage wider public engagement and feedback regarding the changes.
“The measure taken by the FCCC is an exception, and all Fijians are urged to make submissions,” stated the Commission. To facilitate comprehensive input, it plans to collaborate with various stakeholders, including individual consumers, consumer organizations, businesses, government entities, political factions, social groups, and youth representatives. Public feedback can be provided through an online survey or in written format.
The FCCC has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining independence and ensuring that its regulatory decisions are founded on sound evidence, ultimately serving the interests of both consumers and the Fijian economy in the long run. Earlier this month, FCCC chief executive Senikavika Jiuta emphasized that the review is necessary to ensure that electricity prices remain fair and affordable while enabling investments crucial for sustaining a reliable power supply. The updated tariff structure is designed to support a transition to renewable energy sources and enhance the overall energy security of the nation.
Jiuta also highlighted that the revised tariffs would allow for approximately $1.57 billion in investments over the next four years, focusing on increasing renewable energy generation, strengthening transmission infrastructure, and modernizing the national electricity grid. This proactive approach not only fosters transparency and public participation but also demonstrates a significant commitment to advancing Fiji’s energy future.
