The Fisheries (Amendment) Bill 2025, which was tabled recently, seeks to expand the powers of fisheries officers to effectively combat illegal fishing in the region.
This proposed amendment to the Fisheries Act aims to bolster compliance and enforcement by granting authorized officers, including fisheries, police, and customs officials, the authority to demand fishing licenses, inspect equipment, and board vessels suspected of illegal activities. Under the new provisions, these officers will have the right to detain vessels and individuals involved in unlawful fishing without needing a warrant, facilitating more immediate interventions.
Moreover, this legislation stipulates that detained vessels and fishing equipment can be held pending trial, with the Permanent Secretary for Fisheries empowered to release them upon the payment of a bond or fixed penalty. Individuals who obstruct officers in their enforcement duties could face fines of up to $20,000 or three months in prison, while companies found guilty could incur fines of up to $50,000.
