President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu emphasized the importance of fostering unity within Fiji’s diverse society during the opening of the 2026 Parliament session. He reminded Members of Parliament that simply having a multicultural population does not guarantee cohesive national identity and that proactive measures are necessary to cultivate a harmonious environment.

In his address, the President highlighted that the strength of Fiji lies in its multicultural fabric, but he cautioned that true unity must be developed through equitable legislation, inclusive policies, and principled leadership. He urged MPs to be mindful of their behavior within the parliamentary setting, stressing that diligence and objectivity are critical, especially in an election year when leaders have heightened responsibilities.

“History will judge this Parliament not by the sharpness of its debate, but by the wisdom of its outcomes,” Lalabalavu stated, underlining that the atmosphere created in Parliament significantly influences public trust and the overall health of democracy in Fiji.

As the nation navigates through an election period, the call for responsible governance and strong leadership is a hopeful reminder that the collective efforts of leaders can pave the way for a more united Fiji, ensuring a brighter future for all its citizens.
