The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and Defence recently visited the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and External Trade to discuss Fiji’s foreign policy initiatives. This visit aimed to facilitate dialogue between the Committee and governmental bodies responsible for shaping and implementing national foreign policy.
The context of this engagement followed a previous presentation to Parliament where senior officials from the Ministry reviewed the Annual Reports for the fiscal years 2019 to 2020 and 2020 to 2021. Minister for Foreign Affairs and External Trade, Sakiasi Ditoka, along with Permanent Secretary Dr. Raijeli Taga and other senior officials, welcomed the Committee to discuss pivotal matters.
During the discussions, Committee members received comprehensive updates on the Ministry’s initiatives designed to advance Fiji’s national interests through various bilateral, regional, and international strategies. Significant topics included the current status of Fiji’s diplomatic relations, partnerships within the region, involvement in international organizations, trade and economic diplomacy initiatives, and the consular services available to Fijians living abroad.
Additionally, the Committee gained valuable insights into the Ministry’s performance during recent financial years, particularly its responsive actions amid the COVID-19 pandemic. There was a notable emphasis on efforts aimed at strengthening regional partnerships that align with Fiji’s developmental goals. Members had the chance to observe daily operations within the Ministry and engage with diplomats, further enriching their understanding of the management of foreign relations and how the Ministry implements its Annual Reports’ commitments.
This visit highlights the critical role of effective diplomacy for Fiji, especially as the nation navigates various global challenges. It reflects an ongoing commitment to fostering international partnerships that support Fiji’s aspirations and advance its national interests on the world stage.
