In a recent announcement, the FLP called for the creation of an independent National Drug and Institutional Integrity Commission. This body would include impartial experts like forensic auditors and intelligence analysts, rather than current enforcement officials who may be under investigation themselves. The aim is to ensure that the body can operate free from conflicts of interest.
Additionally, the FLP proposed a Public National Security Briefing to provide citizens with clear and comprehensive information regarding the ongoing drugs issue in Fiji. This briefing would identify enforcement deficiencies, provide an analysis of past political decisions that have led to the current state of affairs, and suggest the necessary reforms to curb the drug influx.
The Party has been vocal in criticizing the Prime Minister for his lack of a detailed public statement addressing the escalating situation, asserting that real leadership involves decisive action rather than mere comments to the press. They have also questioned the effectiveness of the Prime Minister’s oversight as head of the National Security Council, insisting that silence in the face of such critical issues is unacceptable.
In addition to calling for a dedicated commission, the FLP is advocating for increased oversight of the police and enforcement agencies. Proposed measures include personnel rotations, lifestyle audits, whistle-blower protections, and external monitoring. These strategies are aimed at enhancing accountability and integrity within these institutions.
The FLP firmly believes that a comprehensive approach must go beyond merely targeting marijuana as the main issue. They argue that addressing institutional corruption requires more than just the temporary suspension of a few officers and that outdated policing methods cannot adequately preserve national security.
