The Opposition refers to this action as an attempt at “concealment,” claiming it represents a significant setback for transparency and accountability within the government.
In a formal statement from the Opposition Chambers, concerns were raised about the implications of this sudden withdrawal, which they argue inhibits Parliament from discussing critical accountability issues highlighted in the report. One particular point of contention is the recommendation for a Commission of Inquiry to investigate the allocation of funds to Pacific Polytech and Service Pro Institute, as outlined in the report.
The bipartisan approval of the report by the Social Affairs Committee and its prior clearance by the Business Committee further complicate matters, raising suspicions that external pressure may have influenced the Chair of the Standing Committee on Social Affairs to retract the report.
The Opposition contends that the withdrawal is politically motivated, aimed at safeguarding specific individuals who might be implicated should the Commission of Inquiry proceed. They assert that this decision to suppress the report reflects an effort to evade scrutiny and prevent the truth from coming to light through parliamentary debate and independent investigation.
