A new tuberculosis and dermatology ward has been officially inaugurated in Fiji, demonstrating the country’s ongoing commitment to improving healthcare services. The facility, which opened on November 2, 2024, aims to enhance access to medical care for residents in the western division of the country.
World Health Organization’s Western Pacific Regional Director, Saia Piukala, officiated the event and emphasized the importance of the new center. He stated, “Fiji is weaving a stronger fabric of care… The new tuberculosis and dermatology Centre is more than bricks; it is a symbol of transformation, a space once overlooked now reborn as a place of healing and dignity.” Piukala highlighted that the integration of previously scattered services will contribute to more efficient and accessible healthcare for individuals in the region.
Health and Medical Services Minister Atonio Lalabalavu expressed his enthusiasm for the new facilities, describing the commissioning as a joyous occasion for the Ministry. He noted that the center not only aims to improve treatment for tuberculosis and dermatological conditions but also contributes to Fiji’s broader goal of fostering a healthier and more resilient population.
The establishment of this center aligns with other recent healthcare developments across Fiji, including the newly opened Dogo Health Centre, which serves around 8,000 residents from nearby districts. The government continues to prioritize the enhancement of healthcare access and quality as part of its mission to address public health needs and challenges, including the rising threat of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs).
