The Ministry of Policing and Communications is urging the public to engage in nationwide consultations concerning a proposed Counter Narcotics Bill. This legislation aims to establish and empower a new Counter Narcotics Bureau, with the goal of significantly enhancing the government’s capability to combat drug trafficking and related offenses.

In their announcement, the Ministry indicated that comprehensive nationwide consultations will be organized to gather opinions, concerns, and suggestions from individuals, communities, and various organizations regarding the proposed legislation and the authority it would bestow upon the new bureau.

All members of the public—including civil society groups, private institutions, and other stakeholders—are encouraged to provide written feedback on the potential implications of the proposed bill. Submissions can be made via email to cnbill@policing.gov.fj, with the deadline for online feedback set for 11:59 PM on Monday, February 23, 2026.

Additionally, the consultation team will conduct in-person meetings across Fiji from February 9 to February 23, 2026. Interested individuals and organizations are invited to attend these sessions at predetermined venues throughout various divisions.

The Ministry has underscored that this consultation process is designed to ensure the proposed law reflects public interests, fortifies Fiji’s commitment to combatting illicit drugs, and promotes transparency and accountability within the newly formed agency. This effort signifies a proactive step towards engaging citizens in the development of drug policy and addressing drug-related challenges in the country, fostering a collective approach to tackling these pressing issues.
