A new library featuring educational resources worth over $8,000 was inaugurated at Cautata District School in Tailevu, coinciding with the launch of the official website for the Library Services of Fiji. The facility’s opening ceremony was led by the Minister for Education, Aseri Radrodro, and was attended by a diverse group of stakeholders, including education officials, community leaders, teachers, parents, and students.
The library, developed with the support of the Library Services of Fiji, is well-equipped with an array of materials including books, learning tools, shelves, tables, chairs, educational charts, toys, and digital devices. These resources are designed to enhance teaching and learning, empowering students to improve their reading and research skills.
During the ceremony, Minister Radrodro emphasized the crucial role libraries play in bolstering education and providing students with expanded learning opportunities. He stressed that libraries foster curiosity, creativity, and a lifelong desire for learning by granting access to a wealth of knowledge and information essential for academic success.
Additionally, Radrodro introduced the newly launched website for the Library Services of Fiji, which offers a broad spectrum of digital resources such as books, journals, newspapers, and online learning materials in multiple languages, including iTaukei, Hindi, Fiji Hindi, Rotuman, and English.
According to the Ministry of Education, there are currently libraries operating in 633 of Fiji’s 745 primary schools and 159 of the 181 secondary schools. The commitment to enhancing both physical and digital library services is part of the ongoing effort to promote reading and learning throughout Fiji, ensuring that students have the necessary resources for their educational journeys. This initiative marks a significant step toward enriching the educational landscape in the region and underscores the importance of resource accessibility in fostering a culture of learning.
