The long-awaited opening of the new double-storey classroom block at Ballantine Memorial School (BMS) marks a significant achievement for the all-girls institution and its community, fulfilling a promise that spans over two decades. Celebrated by the Minister for Education, Aseri Radrodro, the completion of this project comes as a testament to the persistence and dedication of the school community.
Revived through a request to the Ministry of Education, the construction of the classroom block concluded after 16 weeks with an investment of $660,463.27. Urban Building Solution Pte Ltd was responsible for the execution of the project, which significantly enhances the school’s infrastructure by introducing eight new classrooms, two staff rooms, and a modern Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) facility. Additionally, key upgrades such as reinforced beams, new roofing, and improved plumbing and electrical systems ensure a safe and contemporary learning environment.
During the inauguration, Minister Radrodro emphasized the government’s commitment to enhancing educational infrastructure across Fiji, reiterating that this project symbolizes resilience and partnership. He commended the ongoing efforts by teachers and school staff in fostering a nurturing environment for young women, emphasizing the importance of collective engagement among parents and guardians in their children’s education.
The day’s celebrations coincided with the school’s Family Fun Day, further engaging the community and highlighting the collaborative spirit needed for successful educational advancements. In addition to the classroom block, the Ministry of Education acknowledged the support from the Office of the Prime Minister, which donated 200 desks and chairs to improve classroom accessibility and comfort. Furthermore, the WASH Programme and the Ministry of Health contributed three 10,000-litre water tanks, enhancing the school’s water and sanitation systems.
This opening is part of a broader initiative across Fiji to advance educational facilities, as seen with recent inaugurations at schools such as Vatukaloko Secondary School and Nakorotubu Secondary School, which have also seen new buildings and facilities aimed at improving learning conditions. As the government continues to invest in educational infrastructure through projects that address both health and learning conditions, the future looks promising for students across the nation.
