Dr. Saia Ma’u Piukala, the WHO Regional Director for the Western Pacific, highlighted the dangers posed by the rise in extreme weather conditions, which lead to higher risks of water contamination and food-borne illnesses. In light of these threats, Fiji’s Ministry of Health has launched a new Food and Leptospirosis Laboratory in collaboration with key partners.
This cutting-edge facility is set to greatly improve testing capabilities, with the capacity to process up to 3,000 food and water samples each year. Dr. Piukala remarked, “This laboratory enables us to detect threats early and understand what makes people sick,” emphasizing its critical role in swift public health responses. He acknowledged the Fiji Centre for Disease Control as an essential referral hub for the Pacific region, enhancing collaborative efforts to address health threats.
Furthermore, Dr. Piukala praised the digitization of the Fiji National Notifiable Disease Surveillance System, which has the potential to strengthen disease monitoring and outbreak responses—an increasingly vital undertaking amidst the backdrop of escalating climate-related health risks. Emeline Cammack, Counsellor of Human Development at the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), reinforced the urgent need for robust disease surveillance and testing capabilities in Fiji.
