Authorities in Fiji are increasingly concerned following the discovery of a body near Fletcher Road in Vatuwaqa, marking the fourth such incident in the country over the past month. This worrisome trend has ignited fears regarding public safety within local communities.

The remains were found early this morning by a mother and daughter foraging for herbal medicine in the Muaniwavu settlement. Upon locating the body near the mangroves, they promptly notified the police. Eyewitness Waisake Sawanivalu reported that law enforcement officials had to reach the scene by boat. Upon arrival, they uncovered skeletal remains, indicating that the body had likely been at the site for an extended period, potentially since Christmas.

Sawanivalu further noted that the deceased is believed to be a young man aged between 25 and 30 years. The remains were carefully secured and transported in a body bag for further examination. Merewalesi Seruvatu, a local canteen operator who arrived at the location around 7 am, commented on the shock of the community, stating that the body was in a decomposed state and that such incidents were unprecedented in their area.

Police are currently conducting investigations to identify the deceased, as this latest finding adds to a devastating series of recent discoveries. Just weeks ago, a woman’s body was retrieved in Lautoka on December 6, followed by a tragic finding of a 15-year-old boy’s body in Tamavua-i-Wai and another man’s body in Lautoka this past Sunday.

The recurring nature of these discoveries underscores the critical importance of community vigilance and reinforces the need for enhanced safety measures as residents respond to the implications of these alarming events. Despite the unsettling circumstances, there remains hope that increased awareness and cooperation within the community can lead to improved safety and security for all.
