Riyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, the former Chief Executive of the Fijian Broadcasting Corporation, and Vimlesh Sagar, the current Chief Financial Officer, are set to enter their pleas next month regarding charges brought against them by the Fiji Independent Commission against Corruption (FICAC). They appeared in the Suva Magistrates Court today, where the prosecution requested additional time to present specifics related to the case.
FICAC’s Counsel urged both individuals to plead, but the defense argued that they would reserve their pleas until after the particulars were provided. Sayed-Khaiyum is facing one charge of abuse of office and another for general dishonesty, which allegedly resulted in a loss. Sagar is charged with a single count of general dishonesty, which also pertains to causing a loss.
These charges relate to allegations concerning the tender and procurement process for a vehicle valued at $207,470. The case has been adjourned until March 5 for the accused to enter their pleas and for the prosecution to provide further details regarding the alleged loss.
This high-profile case underscores the ongoing vigilance of FICAC in addressing issues of corruption within public offices, reinforcing the importance of accountability among public officials in Fiji.
