Fiji: NFP Leader Warns Against Extremism, Urges Multiracial Unity

Acting Prime Minister and Leader of the National Federation Party (NFP), Professor Biman Prasad, has issued a strong warning against the rise of political and social extremism in Fiji. Speaking at the NFP Annual Convention held at the Labasa Civic Centre, Professor Prasad emphasized the need for national unity in pursuit of a secure, multiracial future. He expressed concerns about extremist elements promoting hate speech, religious intolerance, and divisive politics, which threaten the nation’s unity.

In his message, Professor Prasad condemned recent attacks on places of worship and the spread of inflammatory content on social media, attributing these actions to selfish interests rather than the nation’s shared values. He criticized politicians who use divisive tactics to gain political advantage, condemning rhetoric suggesting minority communities are being sidelined as an insidious strategy for securing votes. He upheld that national security and progress rely on mutual respect and cooperation across different communities.

Professor Prasad maintained that the true strength of Fiji lies in its silent majority, who embody tolerance and generosity. He urged Fijians to disregard divisive voices and to uphold the values of goodwill and unity, which are crucial for the country’s future stability and prosperity.

The convention also addressed NFP’s preparations for the next general election, focusing on maintaining a robust multiracial foundation supportive of Fijian cohesion. The discussions reaffirmed the NFP’s ongoing commitment to its foundational values of unity and multiracialism. As the country’s oldest political party, NFP’s strategies remain pivotal to fostering democracy and inclusivity in Fiji—a theme echoed throughout previous party meetings and conventions, highlighting a long-standing dedication to shared leadership and collaboration.

In summary, the NFP continues to champion a vision of unity amidst diversity, aiming to construct a future driven by collective strengths rather than fractured divisions. The party’s focus on multiracialism and collaboration reflects its commitment to fostering an inclusive society, which could inspire further positive developments in Fijian governance and societal advancement.
