The National Fire Authority (NFA) has urged communities to remain vigilant in fire prevention efforts as 2026 begins, following a significant fire incident on January 3. A three-bedroom lean-to house in Tacirua was completely destroyed by flames, prompting the NFA’s warning.

According to NFA Acting Chief Executive Officer Joel Israel, the fire was reported through emergency number 910 at 3:01 PM, with fire crews from the Suva Fire Station arriving on the scene just 11 minutes later. Upon their arrival, firefighters found the house fully engulfed in flames. They swiftly deployed multiple hoses and utilized water supplies from their trucks, successfully extinguishing the fire by 4:22 PM. Despite containing the blaze and preventing it from spreading to nearby properties, the house suffered an estimated 99 percent damage. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported during the incident.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, and Mr. Israel emphasized the heightened importance of fire safety as New Year celebrations continue and families prepare for the return to school. He encouraged the public to adopt fire safety measures, such as never leaving cooking unattended, storing flammable materials away from heat sources, and performing regular checks on electrical wiring to avoid overloading power outlets.

Mr. Israel also advised families to store matches and lighters out of children’s reach and to develop an emergency plan that all members understand in the event of a fire. In the previous year, the NFA recorded a total of 186 property fires, which resulted in over 90 percent damage, with electrical faults identified as a primary cause, followed by incendiary incidents and suspected arson.

“Fire safety starts with individuals doing the right thing by being vigilant and self-aware,” Mr. Israel stated. The NFA continues to remind the public to call 910 immediately in case of a fire, emphasizing that prompt action can save lives and protect property. This proactive caution from the NFA underscores the crucial role that community awareness and preparedness play in maintaining safety as the New Year unfolds. Through heightened vigilance and adherence to safety measures, communities can work together to prevent similar tragedies and safeguard their homes.
