Fiji Netball Mourns Former Pearls Captain Unaisi Rokoura

Netball Fiji is mourning the tragic loss of Unaisi Rokoura, affectionately known as Una, who drowned over the weekend. A prominent athlete and former captain of the Fiji Pearls, Rokoura was celebrated for her vast contributions to Fijian sports, beginning her ascent in the national netball team at just 17 years old.

Throughout her illustrious career, Rokoura participated in several prestigious events, including six Pacific Games, two Commonwealth Games, and two Netball World Championships, captaining the Pearls from 1997 to 2006. Her talents weren’t confined to netball; she was also proficient in hockey, rugby 15s, basketball, and beach volleyball, marking her as one of Fiji’s most multifaceted athletes.

RubyAnn Sorovaki, President of Netball Fiji, expressed deep sorrow over Rokoura’s passing, noting the profound impact she had as an athlete, coach, and mentor. “Her legacy in Fijian and Pacific sport will live on through the many players and colleagues she influenced,” Sorovaki remarked, emphasizing how Rokoura’s dedication and spirit inspired a multitude of individuals.

Rokoura had significant roles within the netball community, including serving as the head coach of the Fiji Pearls from 2009 to 2013 and again from 2022 to 2024. She was also Country Coordinator for NetGO Fiji from 2017 to 2022, coached the Papua New Guinea Pepes from 2015 to 2017, and worked as a fitness instructor at the University of the South Pacific Gym.

Her sudden passing has left her family and the sporting community in shock, with many expressing their condolences, including her father and brother, who are mourning alongside a broader network of relatives and friends. Tributes pour in on social media, celebrating Rokoura’s unwavering love for netball and her infectious enthusiasm for the sport.

This tragic event highlights the crucial importance of water safety, as strong currents in local rivers have historically posed risks to the community. Authorities are calling on families to remain vigilant during water-related activities, particularly emphasizing the need for supervision of children.

In tribute to Rokoura’s memory, her legacy serves as a reminder of the significant impact one individual can have on both a sport and a community. As the netball community comes together in grief, they also celebrate the lasting influence she has left in the hearts of many, ensuring her spirit continues to inspire future generations of athletes.
