Fiji Netball Mourns Coach Unaisi Rokoura, Remembered as a Lifelong Mentor

Former Fiji Pearls midcourt player Alesi Waqa Paul, currently living in Dubai with her husband Keponi Paul, has honored the memory of the late Unaisi Rokoura, a former captain and coach of the Fiji Pearls. Waqa expressed profound gratitude, describing Rokoura as not only a coach but also a sisterly figure who significantly influenced her life both on and off the netball court.

“Coach Una was my guide, my strength when I was weak, and a true sister at heart,” Waqa said. “Her belief in me extended beyond the game of netball, shaping not only my career but also the person I am today.” Waqa reminisced about a particularly challenging time during the 2018 Commonwealth Games when she suffered a knee injury. Faced with the prospect of not being insured for surgery, she felt lost. It was then that Rokoura stood by her, supporting her daily rehabilitation and instilling a sense of hope when Waqa had nearly given up.

Waqa credited Rokoura’s kindness with extending beyond just her coaching role. In 2019, after leaving her position with the Fiji Police Force and experiencing personal challenges, Rokoura recognized Waqa’s potential and offered her a job as a coach developer with Netball New Zealand. Waqa believes this opportunity was pivotal in helping her rebuild her life, showcasing Rokoura’s ability to uplift and inspire those around her.

Rokoura’s legacy is marked by her compassionate spirit and dedicated leadership as both a player and a coach. Her passing is not only a substantial loss to her family and friends but to the entire Fiji netball community, who remember her as a figure of humility and strength. Fiji Netball President RubyAnn Sorovaki previously stated the deep sorrow felt across the organization at the loss of such a remarkable individual, highlighting the lasting impact Rokoura had on countless players and coaches.

Waqa concluded her poignant tribute with heartfelt thanks to Rokoura, saying, “Thank you, Coach Una, for everything you have done for me. You will forever live in my heart. May your beautiful soul rest peacefully in God’s eternal love.” The sentiment expressed by Waqa echoes a broader appreciation felt within the netball community, emphasizing how Rokoura’s spirit will continue to inspire future generations of athletes.
