The Republic of Fiji Navy (RFN) has recently undertaken practical training sessions aimed at enhancing the skills of its naval personnel in diving and small boat operations. Last week, the diving team received refresher courses from instructors from the United States Navy, focusing on vital skills such as underwater searches, vessel disposal, and managing limited Unexploded Ordnance (UXO). The training emphasized safety protocols and standard operating procedures, ensuring that the equipment and kits provided by the US Navy are utilized to their fullest potential.
In addition, the RFN’s small boat squadron has engaged in practical training with members of the Japan Self Defence Forces Navy. This initiative forms part of Japan’s Official Security Assistance (OSA) program, which aims to bolster Fiji’s maritime capabilities. The small boat training covered repairs, tactical deployment exercises, and drills related to inserting and disembarking personnel with the rigid-hulled inflatable boat supplied through this assistance program.
The RFN extended its gratitude to both the US and Japanese navies for their invaluable support in this crucial upskilling venture. This international cooperation not only enhances Fiji’s security and operational readiness but also supports the nation’s objectives to improve military capabilities and strengthen regional stability.
