Education Minister Aseri Radrodro has voiced strong support for Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka’s recent initiative to shift the management oversight of the Fiji National University (FNU) from the Ministry of Education to the Ministry of Strategic Planning. Radrodro stated that this move embodies a comprehensive government approach aimed at reinforcing FNU’s role within Fiji’s overall national development framework.
The Prime Minister’s decision has ignited discussions concerning its potential impact on aligning FNU more closely with the nation’s development priorities. Radrodro pointed out that FNU’s unique position as a dual-sector institution—offering both higher education and Technical and Vocational Education and Training—makes it essential to weave the university into the government’s strategic objectives.
In accordance with the Prime Minister’s directive, Radrodro has formally notified the FNU Council about the management transition and addressed any concerns from students, staff, and stakeholders. He assured all parties that this strategic reassignment does not signify a reduction in governmental commitment to education, but rather serves as a proactive measure to strengthen FNU’s contributions toward workforce development and economic resilience—key elements in achieving Fiji’s long-term goals.
Radrodro also urged unity among FNU’s staff, council members, and students, encouraging them to remain focused on their academic and institutional responsibilities during this transition period. He reaffirmed the Social Democratic Liberal Party’s (SODELPA) commitment to the coalition government, emphasizing principles of collective responsibility and mutual respect, and the importance of supporting the Prime Minister’s leadership.
