Fiji Names Rising Stars in Extended Squad for MSG Prime Minister’s Cup in Papua New Guinea

Three promising football players from Fiji, Neemish Prasad from Rewa, Asivorosi Rabo from Asivori, and Ryan Naresh from Ba, have been selected for the first time in the extended 38-member national squad. They will join the team for the upcoming MSG Prime Minister’s Cup, which will take place in Papua New Guinea next month. The young talents have garnered attention and admiration for their vibrant performances during the recent Inter-District Championship held in Ba, showcasing their impressive skills and dedication.

The selected extended squad includes a diverse representation from various clubs, with Rewa FC contributing 10 players, Labasa 8, Ba 7, Lautoka 4, and a few others from clubs like Navua, Nadi, Suva, and Nadroga. This blend of players indicates a focus on integrating experience with fresh talent in order to strengthen the national team’s competitive edge.

Assistant coach Marika Rodu, who played a pivotal role in the selection process, expressed that the team is now concentrating on developing a competitive lineup that can excel at the regional tournament. Fiji has been drawn into Group B, where they will face formidable opponents Vanuatu and PNG Red.

Recent articles on Fiji’s football scene have noted significant changes and opportunities for young players, especially with the exclusion of established stars like goalkeeper Jerome Narayan and 2024 Footballer of the Year Ratu Tevita Waranaivalu, who are unavailable for this tournament. Their absence opens doors for emerging players like Prasad, Rabo, and Naresh to shine and gain invaluable experience on an international stage.

As the MSG Prime Minister’s Cup approaches, there is a sense of optimism surrounding the potential of these young talents to contribute significantly to the national team, setting the stage for future successes in Fijian football. The tournament is not only a chance for these players to showcase their skills but also represents a pivotal moment for the growth and evolution of football in Fiji.
