Former Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama and former Police Commissioner Sitiveni Qiliho made another appearance in the Magistrates Court today regarding charges of inciting mutiny. During the session, the prosecution sought additional time to prepare and serve a complete set of disclosures to the defense. Magistrate Yogesh Karan approved the request, extending the deadline for the prosecution until March 14th.

The charges against Bainimarama relate to allegations that, between January 1 and July 31, 2023, he sent messages via Viber to Brigadier General Manoa Gadai, attempting to incite him to assume command and challenge the authority of Major General Jone Kalouniwai, the Commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces.

In a second allegation, it is claimed that Bainimarama and Qiliho engaged in discussions with senior officers of the Fiji Military Forces between July 1 and July 31, 2023, seeking to persuade them to unlawfully arrest Major General Kalouniwai and seize control of military authority.

The proceedings highlight the ongoing legal challenges facing Bainimarama and Qiliho, as tensions within military and political structures in Fiji continue to unfold. As the case develops, it underscores the significant impact of leadership decisions on national stability and governance.
