The Fijian Elections Office has confirmed that the voting process for the upcoming municipal elections in September will closely mirror that of the general elections, providing voters with a familiar experience. Ana Mataiciwa, the Supervisor of Elections, has stated that although there will be some differences, the essential voting procedures will largely remain the same.
Mataiciwa emphasized the importance of voters presenting their voter cards, a requirement that has become standard. She also mentioned the establishment of a Local Government register for voters, indicating that eligible individuals will be registered for the municipal elections in the months leading up to the event. Relevant details about this initiative will be communicated to stakeholders during briefings scheduled for March.
One significant difference in the voting process will be the format of the ballot papers. In contrast to the general election, where ballot papers contain numerical identifiers, the ballots for the municipal elections will include the names of the candidates and their respective parties.
Despite these minor differences, the Supervisor reassured that the fundamental voting procedures would remain intact, ensuring a smooth experience for voters. The Fijian Elections Office is dedicated to providing the public with regular updates on voter registration and preparations for the elections. This proactive approach aims to promote civic engagement and ensure a seamless electoral process, ultimately encouraging greater participation among the electorate.
