Fiji MP Biman Prasad Set for Plea in Disclosure Case

Government Member of Parliament Professor Biman Prasad is scheduled to present his plea on December 8 regarding charges related to statutory disclosure requirements. He appeared in the Suva Magistrate Court this morning before Magistrate Yogesh Prasad, facing serious allegations including failing to declare his directorship in Platinum Hotels and Resorts Pte Limited, a requirement under the Political Parties (Registration, Conduct, Funding and Disclosures) Act 2013.

The charges assert that on or around December 30, 2015, Prasad, as an office holder of the National Federation Party, failed to comply with mandatory asset and income disclosure laws, leading to accusations of providing false information in a statutory declaration. The case has drawn significant public attention, not only due to its implications on Prasad’s political career but also because it touches on broader issues of accountability within the Fijian government.

During the court proceedings, a potential conflict of interest was revealed when Magistrate Prasad disclosed he had previously purchased property through Professor Prasad’s agent in 2010. However, both parties involved, including Acting FICAC Commissioner Lavi Rokoika and Prasad’s lawyer Richard Naidu, indicated no objections to proceeding with the case.

Prasad has been granted bail with a bond set at $10,000, non-cash, amid findings that he does not pose a flight risk. Notably, he is required to inform the court and FICAC seven days in advance of any overseas travel plans.

This legal situation unfolds with heightened scrutiny of political accountability in Fiji, especially following recent charges against other high-ranking officials. The developments surrounding Prasad’s case serve as a reminder of the need for integrity and transparency in public office. As Fiji navigates these challenges, it may prompt discussions on reforms aimed at strengthening public trust in governance and the importance of upholding ethical standards within political institutions.
