The situation of overcrowding has reached a critical point for the Fiji Corrections Services, with healthcare and accommodation resources under immense strain. Earlier this year, concerns were raised about how these constraints undermine service effectiveness for inmates. The Suva Remand Centre, in particular, was identified as operating at double its intended capacity.
Professor Prasad has sought to dispel criticisms that suggest the current administration is merely assigning blame to past governments for this crisis. Instead, he emphasized that the focus remains on solution-driven approaches. Acknowledging systemic lapses, he highlighted the necessity for patience as solutions are progressively implemented. He reassured that resources would be allocated as required, hinting at potential increases in funding to manage the growing population of inmates.
In tackling this challenging issue, discussions have been initiated around judicial reforms and potential shifts in bail conditions to ease the burden on remand facilities. The Fiji Corrections Commissioner, Dr. Jalesi Nakarawa, has been vocal about these reforms, noting that overcrowding adversely affects not only the inmates but also the correctional staff who manage them.
