Efforts to assist communities in the maritime areas of Fiji affected by dry weather have ramped up, as announced by Divisional Commissioner Apolosi Lewaqai. The recent dry conditions have predominantly impacted the islands of Vatulele, Mamanuca, and Yasawa, prompting action to address water scarcity as the cyclone season approaches.
Last week, water carting began in Vatulele, with plans to extend this service to Yasawa and Mamanuca through government shipping services. Mr. Lewaqai emphasized the importance of addressing water shortages, especially for schools that are currently conducting external examinations.
Communities in the affected areas have been proactive, utilizing recent rainfall to fill water tanks and buckets as they prepare for the unfolding cyclone season. In anticipation of heavier rains, the Commissioner reported that resources have been allocated for community training and awareness initiatives aimed at preparing vulnerable communities, particularly those that frequently flood during heavy rains.
