The Fijian government has reported a significant expenditure of over $70,000 for the participation of Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka and several ministers at the country’s Independence Day celebrations abroad this year. Prime Minister Rabuka confirmed the amount in a written response to Parliament this week, revealing that his travel expenses alone totaled $8,899.95.
The detailed costs incurred by other officials included Justice Minister and Acting Attorney-General Siromi Turaga, who spent $11,783.84; Employment Minister Agni Singh at $7,165.72; Youth and Sports Minister Jese Saukuru at $8,583.93; Women, Children and Social Protection Minister Sashi Kiran at $6,328; Information Minister Lynda Tabuya at $11,551.68; and Assistant Health Minister Penioni Ravunawa, whose expenses amounted to $10,500.55.
This disclosure came after Opposition MP Premila Kumar inquired about the total government expenditure related to the ministers’ overseas participation in the Independence Day events. This marks a continuation of discussions regarding government spending practices, particularly relating to official trips, which came under scrutiny when a previous report noted that officials had undertaken 147 trips between April 2024 and April 2025 at a cost of nearly $1.9 million.
In previous discussions on government overseas expenses, concerns were raised regarding the balance between necessary international engagement and fiscal responsibility, especially amid economic struggles faced by the Fijian populace. Previous administrations have similarly faced criticism over lavish spending, which has prompted calls for greater accountability and transparency.
While expenditure on international trips may draw criticism, it does provide opportunities for Fijian leaders to foster diplomatic relationships and stimulate initiatives that may benefit the nation in the long run. Ultimately, the hope remains that engagements abroad will yield positive outcomes, aligning government actions with the welfare of the Fijian people while maintaining an emphasis on responsible management of public funds.
