The Minister for Lands and Mineral Resources, Filimoni Vosarogo, is scheduled to meet with representatives from the mataqali Nabukebuke and officials from the Namosi Joint Venture (NJV) today. This meeting is a response to concerns raised by customary landowners regarding unresolved land issues and overdue compensation payments.

Minister Vosarogo acknowledged the grievances of the mataqali Nabukebuke, particularly regarding the claim of unpaid compensation totaling $75,000 that NJV has reportedly withheld since last year. He emphasized the need to strike a balance between the legitimate concerns of landowners and the necessity for investment in the region, expressing optimism that a resolution could be reached that satisfies both parties.

Petero Saunivalu, spokesman for mataqali Nabukebuke and director of Nabukebuke Holdings, highlighted ongoing disputes involving NJV’s alleged occupation of land without a valid license. Saunivalu indicated that the trust representing the mataqali is seeking eviction from the Waisoi Base Camp and urged the director of mines to take immediate action regarding what they believe to be unlawful occupation. He stated, “The special prospecting licence issued to Namosi Joint Venture has expired, yet operations continue without our consent,” calling for a prompt response from the Ministry of Lands and Mineral Resources.

In a hopeful turn, Netava Bakaniceva, country manager for NJV, confirmed in a prior meeting that the withheld compensation payment of $75,000 would be disbursed to the trustees today, potentially marking a significant step forward in resolving some of the ongoing issues.

This meeting signifies a crucial moment for both the customary landowners and the investment entities involved. It underscores the importance of dialogue in addressing disputes and ensuring equitable treatment for all parties, reflecting a commitment to resolving challenges that affect local communities and maintaining the operational integrity of investments in the area. The outcome may foster a stronger relationship between landowners and investors moving forward.
