Minister for Transport Ro Filipe Tuisawau has addressed recent allegations put forth by Goundar Shipping Limited (GSL), clarifying that all decisions related to vessel operations follow established due processes. GSL had announced intentions to initiate legal action against the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF) board members, claiming they were responsible for delaying the MV Captain Inoke’s operations on the Natovi–Nabouwalu route. Additionally, speculation arose suggesting that the Prime Minister instructed the removal of certain board members.
Countering these claims, Minister Tuisawau emphasized that he rigorously conducts independent due diligence before granting approvals connected to shipping operations. He further reiterated that passenger safety is his utmost priority, and he will not circumvent established protocols.
In his statement, Tuisawau underscored that the old practices of allowing direct communication between vessel operators and the Ministry would not be replicated under his supervision. Meanwhile, MSAF Chief Executive Joeli Cawaki remains on suspension as an internal investigation takes place.
The minister asserted that all stakeholders should respect the lawful investigation process and refrain from utilizing social media to exert influence over the proceedings. He confirmed that a formal statement would be forthcoming, urging professionalism and adherence to due process while the situation continues to evolve.
