Public Works Minister Ro Filipe Tuisawau has voiced his concerns regarding a proposed increase in electricity tariffs set to be announced today. Reports indicate that the Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) will reveal a 22 percent hike in tariffs, prompting the Minister to call the announcement premature and questionable.

Ro Filipe highlighted that discussions with Energy Fiji Limited (EFL) are still ongoing and expressed the government’s position that alternative solutions should be explored to achieve similar outcomes without increasing tariffs. He emphasized that since the government holds a significant share in EFL, its views should be given due respect in the matter.

Adding to his concerns, Ro Filipe expressed disappointment at not being consulted regarding the decision to raise tariffs. As the dialogue surrounding the electricity tariff continues, the Minister’s remarks underscore the need for collaborative discussions to address energy pricing effectively. This approach could open pathways for improved outcomes for consumers while respecting governmental involvement.
