Fiji Milestone: 100 Men Complete Program to Challenge Gender Norms

The Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre (FWCC) has reached a notable milestone this year, with 100 men from Rewa and Cakaudrove completing its Male Advocacy for Women’s Human Rights Program. This achievement reflects an increasing recognition in Fiji that preventing violence against women and girls necessitates men actively challenging harmful gender norms and taking responsibility for their actions.

Since its inception in 2002, the program has been rooted in feminist principles and emphasizes accountability to women. A critical component of the training process involves consulting with women in each community to ensure their perspectives guide the program’s implementation. Only after these consultations does the training for men commence.

During the training, which spans one week, participants delve into various topics, including the root causes of violence, power dynamics, control mechanisms, patriarchy, socialization, and harmful myths surrounding rape and victim-blaming. They also explore concepts of respect, equality, and shared responsibilities. Preliminary assessments from the latest training cycle reveal promising changes in behavior.

Reports from women in several villages indicate that their partners have begun to assist with household chores, engage in more effective communication, and develop a deeper understanding of the pressures women face. Some men are actively challenging sexist jokes and discouraging harmful peer behaviors, while others are making tangible adjustments within their homes. For instance, one participant from Rewa has started accompanying his wife on fishing trips and preparing dinner for her return.

FWCC Co-ordinator Shamima Ali highlighted that these positive changes reflect the essence of the program. She noted, “We are seeing men reflect deeply on their roles and take genuine steps to change their behavior. Prevention is possible when men listen to women, respect women’s rights, and commit to building homes and communities grounded in equality and non-violence.”

The program also touches upon mental health, addressing how toxic ideas about masculinity can inhibit men’s ability to express vulnerability. FWCC is urging government agencies, community leaders, and partners to support evidence-based male engagement initiatives and is encouraging men throughout Fiji to play an active role in fostering equality and respectful behavior.

This initiative not only promotes gender equality but also significantly contributes to the overall well-being of communities, fostering an environment where healthy relationships can thrive.
