Ten individuals are set to appear in court today in Fiji following a significant crackdown on drug-related activities involving methamphetamine across the Central, Southern, and Western divisions. This legal action is part of Fiji’s ongoing efforts to combat drug-related crimes with diligence and commitment. Of the accused, eight will appear in the Suva Magistrates Court, while the remaining two will face charges in the Nadi Magistrates Court.
These charges stem from a series of coordinated raids led by a specialized team within the Fiji Police Force involving the Serious Organised Crime and Intelligence Department, Detector Dog Unit, Mobile Force, and the Immigration Department. Oversight for these operations was provided by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP).
In one notable operation in Flagstaff, a Fijian resident and a foreign national have been charged with Unlawful Possession of Illicit Drugs and Possession of Property Suspected of Being Proceeds of Crime, in accordance with the Proceeds of Crimes Act (POCA). Another raid on Rewa Street resulted in similar charges against three foreign nationals, while a separate raid on the same street saw charges against a Fijian and two foreign nationals for Unlawful Possession of Illicit Drugs.
Additionally, one foreign national is facing charges under the Immigration Act 2003 for being a Prohibited Immigrant. Another individual has been further charged under Section 70 of POCA 1997 for Possession of Property Suspected of Being Proceeds of Crime. In the Namaka area, charges of Unlawful Possession of Illicit Drugs have been laid against two foreign nationals linked to Southern Division operations.
These legal proceedings serve as a testament to Fiji’s aggressive stance against transnational drug trafficking. With strong collaboration among diverse law enforcement entities, Fiji is adopting a proactive strategy to mitigate drug-related offenses, ultimately aimed at enhancing public safety and reducing crime across the islands.
The court appearances and ongoing investigations underscore the commitment of Fijian authorities to eradicating illegal activities. By addressing such serious issues head-on, Fiji is striving to prevent the growth of drug-related crimes, thereby fostering a safer environment for its residents. This concerted effort, alongside community support, promises a hopeful future with a significant reduction in drug-related offenses.
