Two Chinese nationals have made claims following their apprehension during a recent drug raid in Fiji, asserting that they were robbed of nearly $10,000. Xu Qian, 38, and Wang An, 38, appeared before Magistrate Mareta Tikoisuva at the Nadi Magistrate’s Court, seeking assistance to formally report their missing belongings to the police.
Their attorney, Rajshneel Chand, informed the court that Xu Qian reported the theft of a bag containing $7,000 and his passport, while Wang An stated that he lost A$100 (about FJD 148.07) and FJD 5,000 Vanuatu Vatu (approximately FJD 94.5). Mr. Chand confirmed that both men had already notified police investigators about the losses and were instructed to file a formal complaint.
Acknowledging their request, Magistrate Tikoisuva directed police escorts to help secure a Chinese translator for the formal complaint process. Both Xu Qian and Wang An face serious charges of unlawful possession of illicit drugs after approximately 806 grams of methamphetamine were discovered during their arrest on September 23 at an Airbnb in Martintar, Nadi, where it was revealed they were in the country on tourist visas.
The case has since been transferred to the High Court in Lautoka, with the next hearing set for October 6. This incident is part of a broader initiative by Fiji’s law enforcement agencies to combat illicit drug activities, reflecting their commitment to enhancing community safety in response to rising drug-related incidents. Previous law enforcement operations have led to significant drug and cash seizures, highlighting the authorities’ resolve. As these efforts continue, there is a renewed sense of optimism for notable advancements in curbing drug-related offenses in Fiji, fostering a safer community for all residents.
