The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MECC) has taken decisive action following an oil spill incident uncovered in a public drain along Jai Ambamma Road in Vatuwaqa. Investigations by Environmental Inspectors revealed that the oil contamination originated from the premises of Ashok Transport Pte Limited.

To address the situation, the Ministry has issued a Prohibition Notice and Remedial Orders under the Environment Management Act of 2005. The company has also been fined $1,500 under the Environment Management (Waste Disposal and Recycling) Regulations 2007.

The directives mandate Ashok Transport to conduct a thorough cleanup of the oil contamination present in the affected drainage system and on its property. The Ministry has set a deadline of 14 days for the completion of this cleanup. Furthermore, the Prohibition Notice necessitates an immediate cessation of any discharge of oil, waste oil, or lubricants from the company’s facility.

Dr. Sivendra Michael, Permanent Secretary for Environment and Climate Change, underscored the critical nature of complying with environmental regulations. He noted, “Non-compliance with waste permit conditions is a serious offence,” highlighting the Ministry’s steadfast commitment to enforce penalties when negligence occurs and pursue legal avenues as needed. Dr. Michael emphasized that safeguarding the environment is crucial and that businesses must be held accountable for their operational impacts.

To ensure compliance and the efficacy of the cleanup efforts, the MECC plans to monitor the site closely. This incident serves as a reminder to all businesses, particularly those located near waterways, about their obligations concerning the safe handling, storage, and management of oil and other hazardous substances.

This proactive response from the MECC highlights their commitment to environmental stewardship and the protection of public health and ecosystems in Fiji. By holding companies accountable, the Ministry aims to foster a culture of environmental responsibility that benefits both businesses and the wider community.
