Fiji Marks Historic First Laparoscopic Hysterectomy in Landmark Health Collaboration

In a groundbreaking step for women’s healthcare, the first laparoscopic hysterectomy in Fiji has been successfully performed at the Lautoka Hospital, managed by Aspen Medical. This significant milestone was facilitated through collaboration among the Australian and New Zealand-Fiji Endoscopy Group, the Oceania Pacific Health Association, Fiji’s Ministry of Health, Fiji National University, and Aspen Medical. The procedure, which involved removing the uterus through small incisions, reduces recovery times and minimizes postoperative pain compared to traditional surgery.

This medical advancement was led by a team including Dr. Temalesi Windust, Dr. Nanise Sikiti, and Dr. Sailosi Ratumaitavuki. It was supported by visiting endoscopy experts working alongside local teams, highlighting the benefits of cross-border medical collaboration aimed at enhancing healthcare services for women in Fiji.

This success follows other healthcare advancements in Fiji, such as the reintroduction of endoscopy services at Lautoka Hospital in collaboration with Aspen Medical. In recent months, the hospital has acquired advanced medical equipment and new endoscopic technology, reinforcing its dedication to improving healthcare standards. This commitment extends to reducing the need for more invasive procedures by facilitating early diagnosis and treatment.

Healthcare advancements like these are crucial for the region, providing Fijians with access to high-quality medical care without the added burden of traveling abroad. Such developments are hope-inspiring, indicating progress towards a future where critical healthcare needs are met within the country, improving both medical outcomes and economic conditions.

This achievement not only serves as a landmark for women’s health but also symbolizes a broader stride towards enhancing medical support and options for the Fijian community.
