Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka recently celebrated Fiji’s Chinese community during events commemorating two important milestones: the 170th anniversary of the arrival of the first Chinese settlers in Fiji and the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Fiji and the People’s Republic of China. In his speech, Rabuka highlighted the significant role that the Chinese community has played in shaping Fiji’s economy, culture, and national identity since the arrival of the first Chinese family in 1855.
Rabuka emphasized the historical importance of the early Chinese settlers, particularly Moebakling, who established themselves as farmers and traders and fostered respectful relationships with local communities. He remarked, “Your ancestors came to Fiji seeking new opportunities and built lives here, integrating well within society. As a result, we enjoy a rich blend of Chinese-Fijian fusion today.”
The Prime Minister reflected on the evolution of the Chinese community, noting its transition from agricultural beginnings to a dynamic presence in various sectors, including education and entrepreneurship. He expressed pride in their resilience, stating that each generation continues to make meaningful contributions to Fiji’s development.
Jenny Seeto, President of the Chinese Association of Fiji, supported Rabuka’s views by stressing that the values imparted by Chinese settlers have been preserved through generations. She commended the harmonious interrelationships developed through intermarriage and community integration, which have enriched Fiji’s multicultural society.
Looking to the future, Rabuka reaffirmed Fiji’s commitment to strengthening cooperation with China in areas such as trade, investment, and climate resilience. He underscored that this relationship is built on “mutual trust, cooperation, and shared values,” pointing to the promising opportunities for further collaboration.
The celebrations not only acknowledged the historical contributions of the Chinese community but also reinforced their vital role in contemporary Fijian society. This hopeful outlook on the continued partnership between Fiji and China demonstrates a shared vision for mutual growth and solidarity in the years to come.
