Fiji Man Impersonates Police Commissioner on Viber, Charged with Identity Theft

A man from Wanibuku, Nakasi, has been charged with identity theft after allegedly impersonating the Commissioner of Police on Viber to request money from unsuspecting victims. Following consultations with the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, he has been formally charged under the Cybercrime Act of 2021.

The Fiji Police have indicated that the accused is set to appear at the Nasinu Magistrates Court today. This incident underscores the growing problem of online scams and identity theft, similar to another recent case involving a couple from Labasa who were apprehended by the Fiji Police Force’s MPaisa Taskforce. They faced severe charges for engaging in deceptive practices to exploit victims and gain unauthorized access to their Viber accounts, through which they solicited money.

The police have issued a reminder to the public to stay vigilant against online scams and to report any suspicious messages to the authorities immediately. The proactive efforts of law enforcement signify their commitment to combating cybercrime and protecting the community. These ongoing actions aim to safeguard citizens from fraud and help restore trust in digital communications, highlighting the importance of remaining cautious when interacting online. With increased awareness and cooperation, there is hope for a safer digital environment for everyone.
