Fiji’s Ministry of Health is intensifying its vigilance as reports indicate a rise in measles cases in neighboring Australia and New Zealand. Dr. Ratu Atonio Lalabalavu, the Minister for Health and Medical Services, underscored the significance of maintaining Fiji’s measles-free status, which has received formal recognition from the World Health Organization (WHO).

To preserve this crucial public health achievement, the Fiji Centre for Disease Control is enhancing public awareness campaigns, increasing scrutiny at border points, and closely monitoring any suspected cases reported from nursing stations, health centers, and hospitals across the subdivisions. Dr. Lalabalavu articulated the importance of this vigilance, stating, “It’s not just about an achievement; it’s to ensure that we continue to monitor that we do not get any new cases of measles in Fiji.”

Although the WHO’s recognition is a momentous milestone for the nation, the emphasis remains on protecting public health and preventing any potential resurgence of measles. The proactive measures being undertaken reflect Fiji’s dedication to the health of its citizens amid growing health concerns in the region, demonstrating a committed effort to avert the reintroduction of measles and uphold public health safety. This ensures that Fiji remains vigilant in safeguarding its population against infectious diseases as it continues to uphold its health records.
