The Land Transport Authority (LTA) in Fiji has issued a serious warning regarding drink driving and the associated risks as the country welcomes the New Year. Recent data reveals a troubling rise in road accidents linked to alcohol consumption, with three pedestrians losing their lives while intoxicated and a staggering 261 drivers arrested for driving under the influence from November to December.

LTA Chief Executive Irimaia Rokosawa highlighted the severity of the situation, noting that nine cases of driving under the influence have already been referred for show cause proceedings, with more anticipated as the festive period continues and drivers disregard traffic regulations. He emphasized that behaviors such as drink driving, speeding, and recklessness can leave indelible impacts on families.

In his call for heightened road safety, Rokosawa urged drivers to take proactive measures by planning ahead, appointing sober drivers, and avoiding alcohol before getting behind the wheel. He also advised pedestrians to remain visible, utilize safe crossings, and refrain from walking in an intoxicated state. Furthermore, he stressed that passengers have a responsibility to reject rides from impaired drivers.

The message from the LTA underlines that road safety is a collective responsibility, encouraging everyone to celebrate responsibly and make the commitment to “arrive alive” as they usher in the New Year. This preventative approach aims to foster a safer environment for all road users, emphasizing the importance of vigilance and accountability on the roads.
