The Land Transport Authority (LTA) of Fiji has issued a strong warning to Public Service Vehicle (PSV) operators and drivers, emphasizing a zero-tolerance policy towards illicit drug use within the industry. This response comes after concerns were raised by the Lautoka Zone Taxi Association regarding an increase in drug usage among drivers, attributed to long working hours and financial stress.
LTA Chief Executive Officer Irimaia Rokosawa articulated that, although these pressures exist, they do not justify illegal actions that jeopardize the safety of both passengers and other road users. He underscored that violations could lead to significant consequences, including the suspension or cancellation of licenses and permits.
Recent statistics reveal that from January to October 2025, the LTA initiated 559 showcause proceedings, with 15 linked to PSV drivers, resulting in 11 suspensions and four license cancellations. As permit renewals approach on November 27, Rokosawa reminded permit holders that their history of compliance, particularly concerning drug-related offenses, will be critically evaluated.
To tackle this serious issue, the LTA is in the process of finalizing regulations for random drug testing, which will be implemented in collaboration with the Fiji Police Force. This initiative aims to bolster road safety by ensuring that drivers operate vehicles free from drug influence.
Rokosawa also expressed disappointment regarding the Lautoka Zone Taxi Association’s lack of direct communication in reporting drug-related concerns to authorities. He urged all stakeholders to engage with official channels to help identify offenders, highlighting the necessity of shared responsibility in maintaining the safety of public transport.
This proactive strategy demonstrates the authorities’ dedication to creating a safer environment for both drivers and passengers. The focus on accountability and collaboration suggests a positive shift towards enhanced safety standards and increased public trust in the transportation system. The efforts by the LTA and law enforcement agencies to enforce effective drug testing measures signal a promising step forward in addressing and managing drug-related challenges within the industry.
